Do you want to wear clogs walking on the green grass turf while the sea winds blowing gently on the face? Do you want to go somewhere where you see a hundred-year-old tree standing right in front of you once you open the wood-made window? If you do, then you must come to the Museum of Canal (AnPin Costumes), a place where you can experience the scenery in a artistic atmosphere.

Yao is one of the guys who’s wearing a pair of clogs and take this place as his studio. After greeting with us, he asked us to walk around by ourselves as tourists, and try to explore more inside this historical building.

Museum of Canal is located at the riverside of Tainan Canal, it was built by the Japanese colony as an aspect section to control the ships enter and leave the port. It’s now one of the important historical heritages in Tainan.

Followed Yao’s introduction, we walked out of the building. Instead of seeing a morden, complicated city skyline, we saw an open sward. Yao told us, these two trees standing in the middle of the turf are called couple trees. There were a few magpies tweeting and jumping from one to another twigs added a bit vitality in the air.

We asked Yao to tell us the meaning of this metal installation art right in front of us. He said, their team think the concept of creation behind every artist is important. Only the creation which can represent Tainan’s history development can be displayed at this place. The concept of this installation which was made of numerous metal twigs originated from a proverbs: Rains of Keelung; Wings of Tamsui; Sunlights of Taipei; Waves of Tainan.  It means that,Tainan was once a big port where had rapid and turbulent waves.

Right next to the museum is an old discard iron factory. It was a factory went through three generations, but as the structure of economic industries changed, the factory ended up can’t escape from the destiny of closure.  After a discussion between Yao and the  owner of the factory, with the subsidy provided by the ministry of culture, they decided to transform the building into a postmodern style bistro, so that the can fulfill the dream to have a place where they can eat and drink beside the canal.

As we climbed to the roof of the factory, it felt like we walked into another world. Green grass, red bricks, black eaves, blue canal…All these colors stacked together and formed a unforgettable scenery that I’ll never forget. We all really look forward to the completion of the restaurant.

At the end of the day, Yao shared his life journey and stories with us. This was my first time to visit our local promoters, I found out that actually, the reason you want to dedicate yourself to  one thing is very simple, just one tempted moment, just one simple thought, and then you can make things better. During our conversation, I realized what’s a strong persistence adhere to one faith, one idea.

In the future, AnPin Costumes, as a cultural space, will continue welcome everyone who comes here to join the celebration of contraband,  to untie together the riddle of costume culture.
